America’s

‘New Realistic’ Dream Home: The Basics

Showcasing an Expandable 2 Bedroom Container Home (792 sf ft)

And a Two Story 3 Bedroom Container Home (1,584 sq ft)

Each, Equipped With Basic Creature Comforts

The global Shipping Container Homes market is growing; it was valued at 68.89 Billion USD at 2024s end and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate of 5.9% from 2025 to 2032. Meaning the market value is predicted to reach 109.4 Billion USD by 2032.

FYI:

94% of U.S. young adults, 20 to 35 years old, agree owning a home is the most important part of acquiring the “American dream” — yet the average age of first-time home buyers in the U.S. is 36-years-of-age.

On-the other hand, 87% of American seniors aged 55 to 95 say owning a home is a money pit; 54% of whom admit they would happily convert their home to cash if rental properties were not so expensive!

The average price for an existing home in the USA, amazingly stands beyond $300,000 as of September 2024.  While I’m sure that kind of money will buy a really, really nice home, you’ve gotta wonder if it’s really worth the grief, worry and hardship required to pay for and maintain the place— an effect the purchase of such a home, at such a high price, is sure to create!

Sooo, if you’re a discontented 20-to-35-year-old, waiting for a price drop in traditional homes, keep in mind a whopping 66% drop is needed to place you into the lowest tier of the home “buyer’s” marketplace!

As for the unhappy Seniors the time is right to sell that “money pit” for 75% of it’s value and, in the stead of locking yourself into a $800.00+ a month Lease Agreement, downsize to an Expandable Container Home, likely with a third of your capital gain from the sale of that “money pit”!  And remember, if you’ve owned and lived in the house for two of the five years before the sale, then up to $250,000 of your profit is tax-free!

Both buyers referenced herein-above, Seniors and Youth alike, must think “out of the box” by recognizing that the American real estate market’s lavish trend during the past 50 years or so has broken our natural rights to pursue and enjoy “life, liberty, and property” absent of malice from any quarter.  Simply put, we cannot abide a lavish lifestyle without sufficient means and expect harmony with ourselves and others.

A Little Background, please:

The first shipping container home built in the US was completed in 2007 by Peter DeMaria, an architect from CA. However, Phillip C. Clark of Miami, FL is credited with being the first person to patent the use of shipping containers for housing way back in 1987.

The practice of building shipping container homes in China significantly increased in the late 1990s as Shipping Container manufacturing shifted from South Korea to China.  As a result, Chinese manufacturers are among the top producers of Shipping Container Homes found in today’s marketplace —most often at a lower price!

In 2012 Todd and Di Miller, from Australia, lost their home in a flood. The couple build their new home out of shipping containers, creating the 6,000 square foot mansion often called “Graceville Container House”. Yeah, it’s displayed above, and it took 31 twenty-foot containers to build. After it was featured on the Australian TV show Grand Designs, in early October of 2014, people saw how versatile a shipping container home could be, and from there the trend has continued gaining popularity, year after year.

But then, for reasons that may always remain a mystery, designers simply fail to incorporate closet space & laundry facilities into single level homes with limited space, from tiny modular designs to basic Container Homes. This holds true for small multi-level homes too; plus, interior stairways somehow worked their way outdoors in multi-level styles. Yes, space is limited but we must accept reality, a two-bedroom home is better than a 3-bedroom home if you have an appointed space to hangup your apparel, wash & dry your clothing or have the option to go upstairs when appropriate, without leaving the house.

I have added a couple revised basic floor plans for your review which reflects how this flaw could be corrected, a few paragraphs below.

You should also know, the typical container home you purchase from China, the South of France or elsewhere will not come equipped with a Range, a Dishwasher, a Refrigerator-freezer, a Washer / Dryer nor Beds, Tables, Chairs or Sofas. Expect the Hot Water Heater to be small: as a rule, 10 gallons. The interior walls are “sandwiched” with foam in the middle, so you cannot place screws into the walls. You will need to use self-adhesive hooks for hanging pictures & plaques. And yes, you can get Wi-Fi through a wired connection if available, or by utilizing a mobile hotspot or a Wi-Fi extender to boost the signal if Over-the-Air cell service is better.

And finally, for U.S. Customers, as a rule the house will be sent via sea freight from an overseas factory to a US port nearest the construction site and ultimately delivered to your specified location via truck.

Please plan for the receiving location to be large enough and flat enough to accommodate offloading. Such unloading is your responsibility and is typically performed by a large crane and please, arrange for 3-4 people to assist with the home’s final placement onto the foundation.

Bottom line, the American Dream of home ownership has returned to the masses with the simplicity and low cost of the Shipping Container design!
