RC Crawling, What’s That?
RC Rock Crawling is a hobby that generally involves using remote-controlled vehicles to navigate challenging outdoor terrain such as rocks, logs, mud pits and shallow streams.
The goal of rock crawling is to dominate the terrain—it’s a contest of skill vs. nature. You have to keep command of your “rig” while crossing some of the most dangerous terrain “scaled” UTVs can handle. One slip-up could be disastrous for the machine, resulting in a loss of the challenge!
RC Crawlers are typically not fast paced motor vehicles. RC hobbyists enjoy the challenge of circumventing difficult terrain and the realism of the crawling experience without losing control of the vehicle. Often faced with an occasional rock stairway or a rugged rock garden, the rig of choice is apt to be a 100 series Land Cruiser, a 4Runner, a Bronco or a 60s Chevy C-10 4 x 4-either of which would be a great choice.
When unable to go crawling outside, indoor crawling courses provide an optimal alternative. While 1:10 Scale Crawlers are often the rig of choice outdoors, 1:24 scale models are the most common sizes for RC Rock Crawler Indoor Competition.
In the world of 1/24 scale RC crawlers, brands like Kyosho, FMS, and Carisma shine. They are known for detailed designs and strong off-road performance.
Kyosho’s 1:24 “Mini-Z 4×4 Toyota 4 Runner” mixes quality with authenticity, key goals for many RC brands, while the FMS 1:18 “Toyota FJ Cruiser” ready-to-run (RTR) is loved for being very realistic and reliable.
And too, the Axial SCX24 platform has proven to be the easy to operate vehicle on indoor tracks. The SCX24 is fully assembled and ready-to-run; it’s an ideal first Radio Control (RC) rig for beginner hobbyists. Serious scale modelers appreciate that the SCX24 is available with a variety of scale bodies, ranging from the 1967 Chevy C-10 4 x 4 to the 4 x 4 Dodge Power Wagon. Sooo, they not only perform well they look great in action.
A few folks have complained that the RC Rock Crawler Rig’s sticker price is excessive; until realizing there are no additional amenities required of it to perform beyond remarkable tasks!
No Roadways, no Runways, nor Paths required, any rugged trail will do!
